IELTS Reading overview

The Reading module in the IELTS lasts 60 minutes. All reading passages and the questions will be given to you on a Question Booklet.

Notice: You can write on the booklet, but you can’t take it with you from the exam room.

You will write your answers on the answer sheet. As mentioned before, you will have only 60 minutes to:

  1. Read the passages (All three of them)
  2. Find answers to the questions
  3. Transfer your answers to the answer sheet

The Reading module on the Academic and the General Training versions of the IELTS are different:

The Academic Reading module:

Question types

You will see several Different question types on the IELTS Reading test and it is important for you to become familiar with them. The following question types appear on both the Academic and the General Training versions of the IELTS.

MULTIPLE CHOICE

You will see a question with four possible answer choices. You should choose the correct answer from the four choices.

TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN

You will read some statements and based on the information in the reading passage, you should identify each statement as True, False or Not Given.

Not given means the reading passage does not mention this information.

YES/NOT/NOT GIVEN

You will read some statements and based on the information in the reading passage, you should mark each one Yes, No, or Not given.

Not given means the reading passage does not mention this information.

MATCHING INFORMATION

You will locate specific information and identify its location (Either a paragraph or a section).

CLASSIFYING INFORMATION

You will match information to the correct description or category, based on the information available in the passage.

MATCHING HEADINGS

You will math heading to the correct paragraph or section of the passage.

SENTENCE/SUMMARY/NOTE/CHART COMPLETION

You will complete sentences, notes, a chart or a summary of the text choosing words from the text or from a list of options.

MATCHING SENTENCE ENDINGS

You will see the first part of a sentence and choose the appropriate ending from a list of sentence endings.

DIAGRAM LABEL COMPLETION

You will complete labels on a diagram based on the description given in the text.

SHORT ANSWER

You will write short answers to questions choosing words from the text.
